According to the Orlando Sentinel, a new Walt Disney Co. program called "Building a Culture of Healthcare Excellence", being launched this week, has the park collaborating with individual hospitals across the nation. This course has been designed to teach health-care professionals how to make patients as satisfied with a trip to the hospital or the doctor's office as they would be with a trip to Disney. For about $3,500 each, health-care workers can spend three and a half days at the Disney Institute learning how to pay closer attention to the patient experience.
The Disney program’s goal is to make patients feel better about their health-care experiences, and it may save hospitals money. Starting in October 2012, the federal government will begin to tie billions of dollars to patients' experiences at hospitals. This is why some changes Disney recommends signify a cultural shift.
For example, at the theme park, Disney employees are cast members, costumes are uniforms, and customers are guests. "A guest is someone who is invited," said Jeff Williford, a Disney Institute instructor. "A customer is someone who complains." Therefore, just like other industries, doctors and their staffs have to learn that every service matters. By putting the patient and their experience first, the environment as a whole will prosper successfully.
